After the moneymoon

“Adventures of Sally and Mike” by Adam Ochsner

Sally and Mike dressed up one night
And met each other in the bright moonlight;
Sally in silks, had pinned on a rose,
Had painted her cheeks and powdered her nose,
So Mike thot she was a creature grand,
A Princess gay from fairyland.
He straightened his figure and touched his hat,
She smiled and stopped, he began to chat;
And after a little while they did talk;
Then under the sky and the stars true blue,
Mike told Sall that he loved her true.
He had no bars to break or bend,
For Sall was ready and gave consent,
So he took his artificial beautiful thing
And bought her a watch and a diamond ring,
They dressed in swells and strutted about,
And looked with despise at the common crowd.
And so a little longer they did spoon,
Got married and had their honeymoon.
They lived for a little while proud and gay,
Till about their fortune had ebbed away,
Then from without and from within,
The troubles of life sure did begin,
She told him that his love wasn’t true;
Because he never would consent to do,
What once he did just a while ago,
When everything sent on just so;
When he bought her the watches and beautiful things
And everything whereon her heart now clings.
He replied there was never a fool so stupid,
Who would run for a street car after he got it;
Thereupon occurred an awful spell,
Like wild cats both for a time did yell;
Then off he strode and passed each block,
Till he landed square in the poker shop.
He played at dice and cards all day,
Till all his money had rolled away;
Then quite surprised he looked about,
But could not find a safe way out,
So up he got and home he strode
And told her he was worse than broke.
She thot he was a hopeless curse
And went to court and made it worse.
She told about all her troubles and grief,
And wished that the judge should give her relief;
But the old judge knew the plaintiff well
And told her she wasn’t any too swell,
So by fate’s honest, stern old rules
She found out that they both were fools.
And to her mate she returned, not any too proud.
Then both put on a working shroud.
For mischief now they had no time,
They had to save every nickel and dime.
But they found out in a little while,
That happiness was neither fashion nor style;
For life’s simple duty and work each day,
Was it that led to a happier way.
