“Keeping Quiet” – Jon Kabat Zinn, MD

Now we will count to twelve

and we will all keep still.

For once on the face of the earth,

Crisis Poetry

let’s not speak in any language; mimic

let’s stop for one second,

and not move our arms so much.

It would be an exotic moment

without rush, without engines;

we would all be together

in a sudden strangeness.

Fishermen in the cold sea

would not harm whales

and the man gathering salt

would look at his hurt hands.

Those who prepare green wars,

wars with gas, wars with fire,

victories with no survivors,

would put on clean clothes

and walk about with their brothers

in the dark, doing nothing.

What I want should not be confused

with total inactivity.

Life what it is about;

I want no truck with death.

If we were not so single-minded

about keep our lives moving,

and for once could do nothing.

Perhaps the earth can teach us

as when everything seems dead

and later proves to be alive.

Now I’ll count up to twelve

and you keep quiet and I will go.

The poem on “Keeping Quiet” was selected by Jon Kabat Zinn, MD for inclusion at medical centers world wide in his book “The Catastrophe Life.”   Albert Schweitzer, MD, foremost medical missionary to Africa, was quick to note the importance of cats: “Two refuges from misery of life–a cat and music.” This pleases Dr. Seuss’ “Cat in the Hat.” “Bible is a prism through which the light of truth shines. The best way to see God and life clearly is to become acquainted with the full counsel of His written word,” the lens of truth.”–Detective Sunshine, Art and Constitution cat.

Slow your memory loss

Recent findings show that people with an active social life have the slowest rate of memory loss. Red wine taken in moderation may improve memory and cognition–one glass for women, two for men. The general rule is “What’s good for your heart is good for your brain.”
